LOOK 0707: Makalewena
Words by: CL
I feel like at any decipherable moment I only have about five people in my life at a time other than my family; I'm not great at letting people into this little life of mine but once you're in, you're in forever. There are no passersby. But the thing about this is it makes subjects for photoshoots hard to come by and when they do, I will very awkwardly snatch you up, drag you out to a body of water and follow you around with a camera. I don't direct, I just follow and I know it's weird every time because as I follow you around, you squirm and shrivel into your self-consciousness: "What should I do? I don't know what to do with my hands!" and to that I just say "Just do whatever, I'll just follow you around". Absolutely useless, I know. I'm working on it. Regardless, I can only cling onto the hope that you're having fun and that something beautiful will come out of this, if not some photos. And fortunately, it's always true.
On this afternoon, we trekked the road down to Mahai'ula's and fell into more potholes than on a rainy day in a flooding San Francisco and walked the white-lined beaches towards Makalewena. We were shooting the line-up for the upcoming Made in Hawaii Festival at the Hawaii Convention Center of which I feel highly unqualified for but they let me in anyways. Four hoodies, six shirts, you me and the water. Simple, really. And when we got there, that rung true. Radiating in the summer heat, cooled only by the foaming shore break and I made you all put on some godforsaken hoodies. Nevertheless, you all made for beautiful humans and the sun seemed to concur as it emerged from the clouds above and allowed the ocean to glow its quintessential blue. It was an afternoon of compassion and gratitude; of pushing forward and persisting.
